 Bhang is an Indian drink that is prepared using Cannabis( marijuana)leaves and flower buds. This beverage is a popular drink that is consumed during “Holi” and “Shivraatri”.

It is very easy to make with simple ingredients and tastes quite divine. But the the best part of Bhang is It will give you a smooth feeling that will keep going for a long time. Bhang has many medicinal values if taken in “proper” quantities, including improving digestion and appetite, decreasing pain, clearing the mind, improving moods, and aiding with sleep.

I will suggest you to consume small glass of bhang first and wait to see how that effects you before drinking more!Everyone has a different tolerance – know yours and if you can handle then go for another glass.

Cannabis is usually smoked or eaten and comes in 3 different forms.”Marijuana” or “marihuana”, etc., is a name for the cannabis plant and a drug preparation made from it.This is the most common form.It slows down messages traveling between your brain and body. When large doses of cannabis are taken, it may also produce hallucinogenic effects.


I know Holi is over and I am sharing the recipe bit late.However I had no planes for this drink .I have already prepared “Thandai” before Holi and shared the recipe also in my blog.Click here .I have prepared Thandai just a day before for my friends without Bhang .But just at the  night before Holi  my husband called me from office and told me one of his friend gave him “Marijuana” in a small quantity.He get those from Kolkata.I was really excited because I always wanted to taste”Bhang”.So again on the day of  Holi I prepared “Bhang ki Thandai” and the taste was divine.So decided to share it after Holi. 🙂

 This recipe of Bhang Thandai is bit different from the other recipe which is available in the internet.It’s adapted from my grandfathers Kitchen(Mom’s Dad),and before making it I called him and noted every single point and quantity.Every year during Holi when was young he and my grandma used to prepares it for Holi in a huge quantity,I heard the story from Mom of course.But unfortunately I never got the opportunity to taste it.Even though heard a lot about it.During holi we used to have Annual examination so could not get the chance to go there(in Delhi)and celebrate Holi with them.Holi celebration is always grand in North India but in South is quite different.Here people don’t drink thandai and the worst part is here few people plays Holi with “Eggs”,Can you imagine!!!Yes I am not kidding.Lets not discuss all this and without further ado lets take a look at detailed recipe for making bhang with step by step pictures….

Ingredients :
2 cups coconut water
3table spoon/one shot glass of marijuana(fresh leaves and flowers of a female plant preferred)
(Note:You can use bhang golis  (balls of cannabis paste and water) also)
4 cups milk
1/2 cup chopped dry fruits(almond,cashew,pistachios)
2 tablespoons blanched and chopped almonds
1/8 teaspoon garam masala (a mixture of black pepper powder, cinnamon, and cardamon)
1/4 teaspoon fennel seed/snauf
1/4 teaspoon poppy seed/khus khus
1/4 teaspoon watermelon seed
1/2  teaspoon kesar/saffon
1 cup powdered  sugar

Method :
Bring the water to a rapid boil and pour into a glass. Now dissolve the marijuana into glass and cover it about 10-15 minutes.
Now strain the water and marijuana through a piece of muslin cloth, collect the water and save.
Take the leaves and flowers and squeeze between your hands to extract any liquid that remains. Add this to the water.
Place the leaves and flowers in a mortar and add 2 teaspoons coconut water. Slowly but firmly grind the  leaves together. Gather up the marijuana and squeeze out as much coconut water as you can. Repeat this process until you have used about 1/2 cup of coconut water (about 4 to 5 times). Collect all the coconut water that has been extracted and place in a bowl. By this time the marijuana will have turned into a pulpy mass.
Note:Instead of coconut water you can use normal water/cold milk(u should not use boild milk)
Take a small bowl and add 2 teaspoon of warm milk to it.Now dissolve few strands of kesar.
Meanwhile grind the poppy seed,watermelon seed and fennel seed and add milk while grinding.After grinding strain it and keep the milk mixture aside.
Now grind the chopped dry fruits(almonds,cashews,pistachio)  in a food processor/grinder until a fine paste is formed.

Combine all the liquids that have been collected, including the coconut water and the poppy seed/fennel seed/watermelon seed mixture and the marijuana was brewed in.

Now add the dry spices to it(black pepper powder,cinnamon powder and cardamom powder). Add the sugar and milk and kesar milk.Mix all the ingredients properly.

Serve cold with some ice cubes and garnish with dry fruits and kesar.
